Chapter Three

About Us

Reading and writing on grade level are critical milestones for 2nd and 3rd grade students as they form the foundation for all future academic learning. By the end of 2nd grade, students are expected to transition from learning to read to reading independently, with fluency and comprehension. Mastery of phonics, word recognition, and sentence structure are key skills that enable them to understand written content and communicate their ideas. Falling behind at this stage can make it difficult for students to catch up, affecting their performance in other subjects that require strong reading skills, such as science and social studies.

In 3rd grade, reading and writing proficiency becomes even more critical. During this time, students' ability to comprehend complex texts directly impacts their success across the curriculum. Additionally, in 3rd grade, students take the TNReady assessment which requires students to apply critical thinking to reading comprehension and demonstrate their understanding through writing. Without grade-level reading and writing skills, students may struggle to grasp new concepts, participate fully in classroom discussions, and perform well on assessments. Ensuring that 2nd and 3rd graders are on track with their literacy skills is essential for setting them up for long-term academic achievement.
